Abstract Abstract | Publications

The objective of this project is to investigate mathematical models for point-based surface representations which are useful for 3D geometry processing and interactive modeling. Our processing and modeling tools work directly on the acquired point cloud, avoiding the reconstruction of the surface. We developed a set of algorithms for interactive shape and appearance modeling which are available as OpenSource (see Pointshop3D) including painting, texturing, sculpting, filtering etc. Spectral decomposition of the model supports effective filtering, resampling, power spectrum analysis and local error control. Multi-scale methods are used for robustly extracting features from an object. We researched different surface simplification techniques such as clustering, iterative point-pair contraction, and particle simulation. Exploiting the advantages of both implicit and explicit representations, combined with a novel re-sampling algorithm, allows interactive boolean operations for CSG and free form deformations. Using a multi-scale surface representation, sophisticated editing functionality at different approximation levels is provided. Finally, an interactive 3D painting system allows intuitive appearance editing of a point-sampled model using a haptics device.
