Topology-Based Visualization of Vector Fields

Abstract Abstract | Publications

The goal of topology-based visualization of scalar fields is to automatically locate parameter-free, intrinsic features of the data. In the case of scalar fields, ridge-valley structures can be extracted according to several definitions. For vector fields, the topological analysis starts with the extraction of critical points. Critical points are useful for controlling the seeding of streamlines or particles, and the critical type classification and the local inspection of critical points gives a good overview over a dataset. Based on critical points, the set of separatrices yields a partical segmentation of the vector field into regions of similar behavior. The extension of topology-based visualization methods to time-dependent vector fields is a current focus of our research.
